I have a love-hate relationship with coupons. As much as I love the idea of getting a bargain and saving money, there are way more things I’d rather be doing than clipping coupons and filing them. I also don’t enjoy handing coupons over to the cashier at the grocery store and holding the queues up. That’s just me though. I’m sure others don’t mind doing it. 20 Obvious Ways To Save Money On Groceries Without Coupons (That You Might Be Missing!)
1. Use a pressure cooker – Seriously. I’m not kidding. Using a pressure cooker like this
not only helps you cut back on cooking time – it also saves on power costs. Because it cooks in a significantly lesser time, it uses less energy. When you cook with a pressure cooker, like the Instant Pot, for example, you get to use cheap cuts of meat and still end up with a tender, mouthwatering mean.

2. Use cheaper cuts – By getting cheaper cuts or even just Minced Beef, we were able to save at least $7 per meal. I researched recipes using minced beef – and no, it wasn’t meatloaf – and love how versatile it is. I even make savory pies with it now!
3. Buy in bulk – Supermarkets have sales all the time. Look out for products that are sold in bulk or multi-buy. Buying in bulk is best for home staples that you know you will definitely use, like this. You won’t be using 24 in one go, but you certainly will get to it!
4. Browse the sale items and clearance bins – Clearance sales are merely a way for companies to move inventory. While these sorts of sales have promotional intentions behind them, it’s important to note that the reduced prices help them get rid of inventory they no longer need due to incoming new-season products.
5. When looking at grocery shelves – look from bottom to top – Groceries us merchandising tactics like this all the time. They go by the basic principle of merchandising: “Eye level, is buy level” which means that people generally default to picking things which are at eye level. Using the premise, the lower the placement – the fewer sales activity there is. So they place more expensive products at eye level, keeping cheaper and more affordable products at the bottom (or very top).
6. Buy online – When you buy groceries online, chances are, you will be using a list to keep you on track. Another reason to buy online is that sometimes, retailers are able to lower their prices because they get to save on having to maintain a physical establishment. Let’s take Amazon as an example. 7. Sign up for loyalty programs – Many groceries offer loyalty or rewards programs. By shopping from them and swiping your loyalty card each time, you are given rewards in the form of points. When you get to a certain number of points, you are again rewarded with either free products or even cash vouchers. Other groceries also provide Loyalty Program discounts. #Winner
8. Buy from markets when possible – Whenever possible, try to buy from local markets. Groceries have margins on top of the prices of products. Instead of buying your fresh produce from them, try to make a conscious effort to visit your local farmers’ markets. Market products are sold directly from the farm to the table.
9. Don’t be afraid of ‘best before’ stock! – Many people tend to steer clear of ‘best before’ stock. It’s important to know the difference between product ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates. A way to look at is this: ‘Use by’ for safety; and ‘best before’ for quality. Use by dates must be adhered to for health and safety reasons.
10. Schedule your grocery visits – Doing your grocery shopping just as and when you get the chance to is a sure way to overspend.

12. Cook more – This is easy. The more you cook fresh from home, the less you have to eat out right? In fact, if you double the recipes you cook, you can freeze them for quick reheating for another meal. Most frozen dishes last up to 3 months.
13. Buy in season – Buying products that are in season means that you are paying for something that there is plenty of. When there is a lot of something, prices are lower because retailers need to move the product quickly. If they don’t, they face a potential loss if the product spoils quicker than they can sell it.
14. Take regular stock of your pantry inventory – If you know what’s in your pantry (or fridge/freezer), you don’t end up buying doubles. It also helps you to know in advance what meals you can cook. This is a very important step especially when you are meal planning.
15. Use substitute ingredients – If you don’t have a specific ingredient that a recipe calls for… see if you can substitute it with something else. Google is my best friend for substituting ingredients. For example – if a recipe calls for cake flour, this shows you that you can make your own using plain flour and cornstarch. Easy!
17. Use a grocery list – If you don’t use a grocery list, chances are, you’ll end up buying things you don’t need. Make a plan, and stick to it! 18. Stay away from convenience foods – Convenience foods are meant to be just that – for convenience. Not only are they more expensive, but they are also unhealthy for you. Most convenience and processed foods contain huge amounts of sodium, sugars, and saturated fats. Let’s not forget preservatives!
19. Don’t buy soda and juice – Sodas and juices should be household treats, and not for everyday consumption anyway. If you can stay clear of them – even better. Water is free, so why pay for drinks?
